Soufriere, Saint Lucia - An Enchanting Fishing Village

There are very few places on earth that truly transport you from the chaotic 21st-century hustle and bustle to a warm and inviting calm and peaceful place such as Soufriere. Take this journey with me, the Nomad, exploring the wonderful seaside township of Soufriere, Saint Lucia.

Soufriere is a small fishing village on the southwest coast of Saint Lucia. Known for its towering twin peaks (Gros and Petit Pitons), Soufriere stands in stark contrast to the capital city of Castries located on the northern coast of this leeward eastern Caribbean paradise.

Strolling through Soufriere gives you a chance to reflect on life in its purist form.

This seaside paradise has a beautiful, calm bay peppered with wooden fishing boats.

The church/chapel is the center of the town's square. This particular church was constructed in the late 1800s and stands like a beacon calling all those at sea to dock their ships and take refuge in Soufriere.

There are no large ports in Soufriere. The fishing boats are anchored just a few feet from shore. The boats are taken out daily and catch distributed to a few seaside restaurants and sold at the open carts and market along the town's main street.

Many of the building are storm-proof brick and cement construction, but there are several wooden houses and shops.

Viewed from the surrounding hilltop, Soufriere is a wonderful mosaic pastel-colored buildings framing its picturesque bay.

Throughout the city, visitors will see the influence of previous French and Spanish colonization.

The people of Saint Lucia, particularly this small southwestern village, survive with very little. These humble homes help shelter families and provide the foundation for several small businesses.

Regardless of where you're staying on the beautiful island of Saint Lucia, Nomad's Lens recommend that you venture beyond the restrictive walls of your resort and discover the enchanting fishing village of Soufriere.

You might even decide to stop for a hair cut.
