Ho'okipa (pronounced "ho-o-key-pa") means hospitality. Ho'okipa Beach is best known for its world-class windsurfing. But it is also the favorite location of beach bound sea turtles and monk seals seeking a safe haven for rest and sleep.

Several professional windsurfing competitions are held at Ho'okipa Beach. Locals and tourists alike visit to see aerial acrobatic surfing from some of the best windsurfers in the world.

Although it's possible to wade in the turbulent waters and occasionally snorkel near the eastern edge of the beach, Ho'okipa is certainly not the place for a casual swim.

Ho' okapi beach is just a short drive away from Paia Town along Hana highway. After turning in to the main entrance, there is a cliffside overlook used for capturing panoramic views of the scenic North Shore waves or photos of windsurfing and surfers. The overlook provides visitors and locals alike with an unobstructed view of the majestic beauty of the North Shore.

The winter months are best to observe expert surfers mastering their techniques on the big swells of the North Shore.

Families also bring their small children to enjoy to protect a waiting area created by the rugged shoreline.

The green sea turtles, also known as Honu, come to shore nearly every evening to rest before embarking on their ocean voyage.

Ho'okipa Beach along the North Shore of Maui is a perfect place to stop on the Road to Hana (see earlier blog) or visit to experience the spectacle of windsurfing, kite surfing, or surfing at its best.

Bring along your towel, beach chairs, and umbrella - and don't forget your camera.

Mahalo,
