Haleakala "the House of the Sun" is a dormant volcano and treasured national park occupying nearly all of east Maui.

The summit, Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill), is perched more than 10,000 feet a above sea level overlooking the lunar appearing crater with this numerous trails and seveal cabins.

To explore this increadible natural wonder, most visitors start from Kahalui or Paia Town venturing along Haleakala Highway.

Previous blogs reported no bathroom facitities at the summit; however, Nomad's lens was pleased (and relieved) to discover well kept restrooms with modern facilities (not just port-a-potties).

It's strongly suggested to drink plenty of water before and during your journey to the Haleakala summit. Also, consider starting with a slower pace once above 7000 feet elevation to appropriately aclimate to lower oxygen levels, thus avoiding altitude sickness.

The entry fee to Haleakala National Park is $20 per car. Reservations are required for park access after dark in you plan on being at the summit for sunrise.

Plan on approximately 2 hours traveling to and from the summit from Paia town. After entering the park at the ranger's station, it will take approximately 30 minutes to reach the summit.

Check the weather forecast prior to your journey as clouds shift quickly and can limit visualization. Also, a light jacket will come in handy as the temperature at the summit it typically 30-35 degrees cooler than that at sea level.
If you're planning on hiking any of the trails, bring plenty of water and sturdy hiking shoes. More than 35 miles of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty are available in the wilderness area and near the summit.
Remember, this is sacred land and should be approached with respect.
Quiet the soul and spirit; reflect and enjoy.
