Whales and Waves - Maui, Hawaii

The warm shallow waters surrounding the Hawaiian islands create a perfect place for whales to migrate and mate.

Nearly 5,000 humpback whales complete the transpacific journey from Alaska to Hawaii annually.

The majority of North Pacific humpback whales are born in the warm shallow waters surrounding the island of Maui and migrate back annually from Alaska where the cold waters would threaten the survival of newborn calves.

Humpback whales can grow to 40-50 feet with weights of nearly 50 tons. Females are typically larger than their male counterparts.

Surprisingly, whales spend 4 months near the shores of Maui without consuming any food. Although plentiful in Alaska, there is an absence of food source in waters surrounding Maui.

Whales can be seen off the shores of Maui from November till May each year. February is typically the most active months with countless sightings from the southern and western coasts of Maui.

There are affordable excursions for whale watching from Lahaina, but you can also see the whales in action from the south and western shores, often without the need for binoculars or telescope.

Add a whale watching excursion to your next visit to Maui. You won't be disappointed.
