There is only one real way to experience a country beyond the confines of the all-inclusive resorts. Certainly you can visit the local shops and haggle for the lowest price for t-shirts and souvenirs. But, nothing beats the priceless memories of a beautiful sunset or great conversations with newly made friends while dining at a local restaurant.

Real meals in Jamaica and most Caribbean islands aren't the product of large batches typical of resort buffets. As a matter of fact, unless ackee and salt fish or local meals are requested, there is not very much authentic about the cuisine at the resorts. My suggestion — take a lunch or dinner local excursion.

There are a few wonderful places in the Rose Hall (Montego Bay) area that I strongly recommend. Certainly there are plenty of places to get jerk pork or jerk chicken, but no place compares to Scotchies. Scotchies boast of the best jerk chicken in Jamaica and perhaps in all of the Caribbean. The jerk chicken and pork at Scotchies is addicting.

Add the wonderful service and graceful hospitality to the expertly prepared jerk and you have a perfect recipe for a great dining experience. Speaking and enjoying time spent with local Jamaicans in priceless.

My suggestion is to visit Scotchies on your drive to or from a local excursion. Consider adding the steamed vegetables or festivals to your ordered jerk chicken for fish. Coconut water or Red Stripe is just what's needed to silence the spicy delectable flavors of Scotchies secret scotch bonnet pepper rub.

The area's safe, people friendly and food is absolutely delicious. There are several shops in the small local market area near Scotchies. Don't be fooled by the modest appearance of Scotchies from the street. The dining area is island chic and very comfortable (with wine barrel chairs and picnic style tables). Please let them know that I sent you and you'll certainly get an unexpected gift!
