Jamaica: A must-see destination for every 'bucket list'
I've had an opportunity to travel to many exotic places from remote islands, hilltop escapes and cosmopolitan international cities around the world. But, there is something uniquely satisfying about seeing the beautiful island of Jamaica from the plane as it approaches the airport in Montego Bay.
Our usual port of entry is Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. There are two other international airports in Jamaica: Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and the smaller Ian Fleming International Airport in Ocho Rios.
The majority of tourist fly into Montego Bay with its updated airport and immigration kiosk capable of handling large numbers of daily international visitors. The lines in the immigration area can get quite long during peak travel season, so patience (and maybe a great book or magazine) is required.
Transportation is seamless and safe from the airport to resorts, guest houses or villas. The majority of visitors pre-pay with their tour company or hotel to get bus or shuttle transport to their resort. I prefer to rent a car. There are several car rental agencies in Jamaica including Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and Island Car Rental. A note of caution regarding car rental in Jamaica -- the typical credit card auto rental insurance does not apply on the island of Jamaica. So, it is strongly advised to purchase insurance coverage for any rental in Jamaica (even for short trips). The pot holes alone can do significant damage to vehicles, not to mentioned being sideswiped by a frequently passing local taxi. Trust me, additional purchased insurance coverage is a must in Jamaica.
It is not mandatory to convert US dollars to Jamaican currency at the airport. There are many other places for currency conversion giving much better service and rates than the unfavorable rates offered at the airport. Local banks and nearly all of the major hotels offer some of the best conversion rates. Currently, expect to receive $127 Jamaica Dollars of every $1 US dollar.
The best option is to use credit cards for most major purchases (including meals) as this will provide the most favorable conversion rate. One caveat - make sure that you have a credit card that waives international transaction fees. For a one week trip, convert only $100 US to Jamaican currency for off-property small purchases, fruit and snacks when driving in remote areas and for tips at the hotel.
Whether you're relaxing on the beach or poolside at boutique or larger all-inclusive resorts; having fun shopping at one of the many local shops; or enjoying a wonderful excursion such and Mystic Mountain, Dolphin Cove or Dunn's River Fall; you will certainly appreciate the delightfully friendly spirit of the wonderful people of Jamaica.
