Negril, Jamaica: Unspoiled Beauty and Tropical Paradise

Negril, Jamaica is unquestionably one of the most beautiful places on earth. Negril is know for its laid back style and amazingly gorgeous beaches. The city's name was shortened from the original Spanish version, Negrillo.

Now, I know that you're thinking that Negrillo and the shortened Negril were probably descriptive of the persons encountered by the Spanish, the name was really used to describe the dark cliffs of Negril and not the people.

It wasn't until the late 1960's and 1970's that Negril evolved as a tourist destination following the completion of the paved road from Montego Bay to Negril.

The road to Negril takes you through several smaller cities including Lucea, Green Island and Sandy Bay. Traveling to Negril is safe with plenty of roadside stops such as our favorite small hut serving coconut water, Red Stripe and ice cream.

Sandals, Hedonism II, Grand Lido and Beaches are some of the more popular all-inclusive properties in Negril.

However, we prefer small and medium size boutique resorts such as the spacious oceanfront Sandy Haven and the suites of Coco La Palm (which just so happen to be next door to each other).

Walking on Negril beach is an experience that will transport you back to the 1970's and 80's where nothing's rushed and life is slow-paced and Ire. Along the beach are many restaurants, bars and local shops, each with their own unique blend of Jamaican culture.

An article about Negril wouldn't be complete without mention of Rick's Cafe. Great music, lively people and cliff divers - amateur (tourist taking a leap) and skilled. Any trip to Negril should include Rick's Cafe, and maybe a bucket list cliff dive. The legendary cliff divers of Rick's Cafe is most deserving of it's own blog---keep and eye out, it's coming soon.
